JFS or Journaled File System is a 64-bit file system that is mainly used in HP-UX systems. It is a journaling file system that was created by IBM. JFS ensures partition uniformity by using the database-logging technologies. If your HP-UX operating system gets crashed, JFS can restore the consistency by carrying out “logredo” process that accesses the information that is stored in JFS log file.
JFS is a byte-level and log based file system that is used for high performance and transaction oriented systems. Robust and scalable, its benefits over a non-journaled file systems are its high performance, quick restart capability and system restoration to a consistent state in a short time period.
Design Features
JFS file system was designed to have fully integrated journaling from beginning, rather than adding to existing file system.
It uses extent-based file addressing structure, along with advanced block allocation schemes, for creating efficient, scalable and compact structure to map the logical offsets in files to physically address on the hard drive.
JFS supports variable block sizes of 4096, 2048, 1024 and 512 bytes per-file system basis. It allows the users to optimize the space utilization depending upon their application environment.
JFS file system dynamically allocates space for the disk inodes by freeing the disk space, when it is no longer needed. It does not reserve any space of disk inodes when the file system is created.
It follows two different approaches for organizing the directories. The first one is used for small directories and the second one is used for large directories.
Although, JFS is an extremely powerful file system but it is not totally safe from corruption and other problems. Sometimes, you may encounter that when you start you HP-UX computer, it does not boot up and displays an error message.
This problem may occur due to JFS file system corruption. It could be due to virus attack, improper system shutdown, software malfunction and other similar reasons. In such cases if we do not have back and another system we cannot proceed with our daily work. All your critical data files become inaccessible and you face critical situations of data loss.
To overcome these problems, you need to opt for HP UNIX Data Recovery. It is possible using powerful and advanced third party applications, known as HP UNIX Recovery software, such as Stellar Phoenix HP UNIX Data Recovery software.
Phoenix HP UNIX Recovery tool works in most of the data loss situations and performs accurate and safe Data Recovery HP UNIX. It supports recovery from JFS 3.0, 3.1 and 3.3. Phoenix HP UNIX Recovery is compatible with HP-UX 10.x, 11 and 11i.

We are absolutely pleased with the Services rendered by Stellar. Stellar services have been prompt and may be they have gone overboard to ensure data is completely recovered for the Capgemini Users within short time whenever demanded. We highly appreciate their Services in terms of Logistics and Follow up.
